Get stuck into the Great British Spring Clean

Environmental volunteers will be rolling up their sleeves to tackle litter and clear parks and waterways in Leicester as part of a national clean-up campaign.

Keep Britain Tidy’s annual Great British Spring Clean campaign runs from March 17 to April 2, with a series of events taking place to help make the city look its best as warmer weather approaches.

Members of the Leicester Environmental Volunteers (LEV) will join forces with a range of corporate and community groups in a series of activities, ranging from clearing up parts of the River Soar and Bushby Brook, to litter picking on Rushey Fields Recreation Ground, Castle Hill Country Park, Western Park and Cossington Recreation Ground.

On Tuesday, March 28, staff from Leicester City Council’s Parks and Open Spaces teams, City Wardens and LEV members will be at Cossington Recreation Ground from 10am to 1pm, running information stands as well as offering advice on volunteering and a range of environmental community issues.

Leicester City Council’s environmental engagement manager, Nicola Holt, said: “The Great British Spring Clean takes place every year to encourage people to take care and clean up the natural environment.

“This year’s focus is the pride that volunteer litter pickers have for their local community, and we’re running a series of events over the next couple of weeks including litter picking on our parks and green spaces.

“If the weather conditions allow, volunteers will be pulling on their waders and climbing into the Bushby Brook on Ocean Road Open Space to cut back brambles that are dangling in the water and clear the brook of litter and debris.

“At the end, we will shout out about how many bags of litter and larger items we have found and retrieved along the way.

“It’s a really good chance for people to get involved in improving their local environment, and to find out more about the hard work that the volunteers carry out throughout the year.”
