Schools take part in Clean Air Day

Pupils and staff from schools in Leicester are taking part in Clean Air Day.

Further information

Clean Air Day, on Thursday 20 June, encourages everyone to think about sustainable ways to travel to school. Roads outside some schools will be closed for the day to allow pupils to hold outdoor assemblies, bike training sessions and sports activities on the street.

At St Mary’s Fields Primary School, pupils will walk to nearby Aylestone Meadows accompanied by Strider, the walking mascot, where they will take part in craft and wildlife activities. West Gate School will hold a sensory assembly, while Catherine Junior School will have a visit from Leicester Libraries’ Electric Bookbus, as well as holding a bike sale and taking part in a big outdoor lunch. There will also be a ‘trashion’ show on the street – of fashions made of trash – and Green Flag awards will be presented, for good environmental initiatives at the school.

A Hop! fully electric green bus, with its signature ‘ribbit’ effect bell, will park outside Folville Junior School for the day, while Earthsense will visit Montrose Primary and Coleman Junior schools, where they will be doing some air quality monitoring with the pupils.

Judgemeadow Community College will hold a plant and cake sale on the street outside the school, as well as sporting activities.

Temporary road closures will be in place on Compton Road to allow St Mary’s Fields Primary School to hold an on-street assembly and PE activities on the street. Brandon Street will be closed to allow for the activities at Catherine Junior School; Newhaven Road will be closed where pupils from Judgemeadow Community College will be holding their cake and plant sales for local residents, and Folville Rise will be closed to traffic outside Folville Junior School.

The events are being run by Leicester City Council, national walking and cycling charity Sustrans and Living Streets, the UK charity for everyday walking.
