Summer Reading Challenge - Wild World Heroes

Cartoon children going reading for the Summer Reading Challenge

The Summer Reading Challenge encourages reading during the summer break. It has long been recognised that this period can see a drop in the reading habit with the resulting impact on performance in the new school year. It also gives an opportunity to encourage parents/carers to get actively involved in their child’s reading.

Further information

The scheme promotes library membership/use and reading for pleasure.  It starts on June 26 and finishes on August 31 and is open to all children/young people 0-15 years, in Leicester libraries and on Children’s Bookbus. Children can continue to finish the scheme in Leicester until Saturday 11 September.

This year’s theme invites children to track down six amazing books and become a Wild World Hero, standing up for the future of our planet by joining in a celebration of reading, nature and action for the environment. They’ll be rewarded with a Wild World Heroes pack containing, poster, stickers, bookmark and ‘zine’ competition template as they read any books they like from their local library. They’ll have an opportunity to take part in our animal activities and a summer competition too and when they complete the challenge, they’ll be awarded a certificate and medal.

Five-minute video promoting and explaining the challenge

Here is a link to a five-minute video to show in your school assembly or the classroom promoting and explaining the challenge. Parents/carers play a major role in their children’s participation during the summer break, so please share this on the school website and in any other e-communications. For printed communications our videos and lots more information can be found at leicester.gov.uk/summerreadingchallenge

Win a collection of books for your school

As a special incentive for Leicester schools, to encourage participation and to link summer reading to the new school year, we are offering an opportunity to win a collection of books for your school.  This exciting opportunity will be won by the Leicester city school which has the highest percentage of children entering our summer ‘zine’ competition. Every Wild World Heroes pack, available free from Leicester libraries, contains a specially designed ‘zine’ template for children to enter this competition. Please encourage them to enter to win books for themselves and the school.
