Summer Reading Challenge - Gadgeteers

The Summer Reading Challenge encourages children to use their local library and maintain their reading habit through the long summer break and aims to mitigate the dip in performance associated with a long break from reading that many children experience in the new school year. It also gives an opportunity to encourage parents/carers to get actively involved in their child’s reading.

Further information

Throughout the whole of July and August, children 0-15 years can sign up to take part and they have until Sunday 11 of September to complete the six-book challenge. In Leicester we have an adult challenge too, to encourage good role modelling. Our offer is enhanced with a range of free and very low-cost activities for the whole family, all designed to promote reading for pleasure and the joy of sharing books and stories.

Win a £100 book prize for your school

To maximise impact it is, of course, essential that schools understand the scheme and promote it to their children. A Gadgeteers invitation bookmark for every primary school child in Leicester has already been delivered to schools and, as an additional incentive, will offer a £100 book prize to the school from which the highest percentage of pupils complete the challenge. To make this easy, we will collect their school’s name from each child who completes the challenge when they collect their certificate from their local Leicester city library. We also recommend that children bring certificates to school in the new term and, from feedback, understand that this can instigate positive conversations about children’s summer reading experience between children and with teachers.
